What is Levitra?

Levitra is a PDE5, or phosphodiesterase type 5, inhibitor meant to treat erectile dysfunction (ED). The drug enables men to achieve an erection and to maintain it during a physical intercourse. PDE5 inhibitors have become the first oral medications for ED treatment.

The mechanism of their action lies in blocking the degradative effect of phosphodiesterase type 5 on cyclic guanosine monophosphate (GMP) in the smooth muscle cells that line the blood vessels supplying the penis corpus cavernosum. As a result, the vessels widen, ensuring a more powerful blood flow into the penis, and a patient experiences an erection.

Levitra, known also under its generic name vardenafil, appeared in 2004 and was manufactured by GSK and Bayer Pharmaceuticals. In 2005 GSK transferred the co-promotion rights on the medication to Bayer in many countries outside the USA.

Advantages of Levitra

As one of the three worldly recognized drugs for ED treatment, Levitra has many advantages. Thus, clinical tests showed that patients who were using Levitra had better erection than those who were given placebo. It takes only from 30 to 60 minutes to Levitra to act, so the effect of the medication can be noticed very soon. Other ED drugs are good as well, however, they need more time to start acting, usually an hour or so, while Levitra allows to keep spontaneity, taking a pill half an hour before having sex. The drug works only after sexual stimulation being provided, so a patient can feel absolutely naturally.

Levitra was tested in four major clinic trials. Thus 2431 men, from 20 to 83 years old, were given Levitra pills within a definite period of time. In the North American study 5 mg, 10 mg, and 20 mg doses of Levitra demonstrated 65%, 75%, and 80% effectiveness respectively. European tests showed almost the same results, confirming the efficiency of the drug.

Recommended dosage of Levitra

There exist different doses of Levitra. Most often the drug is available in 2.5 mg, 5 mg, 10 and 20 mg. A standard starting point is 10 mg, but each patient should adjust his dosage depending on his health, age and how long his has been taking the pills. If a man has a history of heart attack, problems with liver or kidneys, or is an aged person, it is recommended to opt for lower doses, for instance. Usually doctors advise to start with a small dose and then, in case the drug doesn't provoke a negative reaction, to increase it.

Levitra side effects

The most widespread Levitra's side effect is nausea. Less common adverse reactions include facial oedema, eye pain, abnormal vision, arthralgia, palpitation, myalgiam, tachycardia, priapism, itch, rash, hypertension, abnormal pain, photosensitivity and back pain.

Special warnings about Levitra

Levitra is a strong medication which should be taken only one time a day. It is important to know that by taking a double dose you will not make your sexual performance better. In addition, an overdosage may lead to serious consequences, especially if you previously had problems with the vessels, kidneys, liver or heart. For the same reason you shouldn't share Levitra with friends or take somebody else's dose.

The drug should be taken by mouth, with or without food, 30-60 minutes before sexual activity. In case you missed a dose, take it as soon as you remember.

Levitra shouldn't be mixed with all kinds of nitrate medications; otherwise life-threatening low blood pressure may develop.
